Do Your Research like Taylor Swift
Like many of you, my husband, and I watched the Presidential Debate. A debate gives you a bird’s eye view into the candidates’ temperaments and maybe a splash of policies. Two minutes per question is not enough to go into a lot of details, but you can tell in those two minutes if they address or completely sidestep the issue.
It is a fascinating if not rather horrifying time politically in the US. Today is the anniversary of 9/11, a day we never wish to repeat and still a memory which fills me with sadness. Another day to never forget is 1/6. The events on that dark day shocked me even more since it was an attack on our democracy by Americans.
One candidate is pitting American against American. One is asking to Americans to come together for the common good.
I really would love someone to explain to me how Donald Trump’s rhetoric of hatred resonates with half of our country. I was secretly hoping he would give us some idea of policy instead of just attacking and twisting facts if not downright lying. I am still chuckling over the pets being eaten in Ohio. I could not help feeling he is delusional, especially about the last election’s results.
Taylor Swift is a brave, well-spoken creator. Many folks fear for their well-being and that of their loved ones if they speak out against former President Trump or far right politicians. Last night Ms. Swift endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz because “ she is a steady-handed gifted leader….we can accomplish so much more if we are led by calm not chaos.” Ms. Swift says she has done her research and encourages us to do ours. She encourages her followers to register and to vote. Brava, Taylor Swift!!
This morning a quote from Donald Trump says “Taylor Swift will pay the price for endorsing Kamala Harris.” I certainly hope his far right fans realize he meant she could lose some of her fan base for stating her political beliefs. He did not threaten her physical well-being. No one should be taken out of context. I do check various sources. I listen to Fox, CNN, and NPR. Again it is fascinating and frightening how different the spin can be, or what is not covered at all.
So like Taylor, I ask you to do your research and vote for whom you believe can run our country. Personally I hope for run our country, not rule our country. I am a patriot who believes in the democratic process, even with its flaws and antiquated policies. I do believe changes should be made. For one the electoral college no longer has a use.
God bless America. I hope all Americans can maintain freedom of speech. Taylor Swift, I am a total fan!
