Had to Add These Two Picture Books to My Collection
Sometimes you just have to buy a book…or two. I recently purchased MELL FELL by Corey R. Tabor, a Caldecott Honor book, and KNIGHT OWL AND EARLY BIRD by Christopher Denise.
I am such a fan of KNIGHT OWL, I just had to grab this one! Firstly, I could just get immersed in the illustrations as they are beautifully detailed. The story is ,of course ,super cute as well. Denise does a great job of voice in his characters. I read it a few times pondering how does an bird of night connect with a bird of day? An interesting predicament. Denise creates two very different birds that eventually find common ground. Diversity has its perks, and the book makes me smile.
I learned about MELL FELL when I was looking for comps for my manuscript ORVIE FINDS HIS PAW POWER. Both Mel and Orvie have confidence they can do what they were born to do. Both overcome obstacles and eventually succeed, but the reader has a vested concern whether each animal will succeed. Both stories fill the reader with a sense of happy accomplishment. Part of MELL FELL’S charm is the change in perspective, where you must turn the book as Mell reverses direction. The illustrations by Tabor are bright, light, and give the reader a hint all will be well. The book is charming.
Both of these books crave to be read and reread. I would recommend checking them out.
